enjoy a weekend in oslo

oslo, norway’s capital and cultural hub, has much to offer visitors and residents alike. from incredible public transportation to geography, oslo has become more than just another northern european city to us. it’s a place to get lost in the woods, cosy up in a lodge, dip in the fjord, or wander the streets in search of cinnamon buns and live music.

here’s my top picks for must visit places every time i find myself in oslo.

Food

nordvegan

Are you a vegan? This is a great spot to eat and relax in the centre of Oslo. Are you a non-vegan? This is a great spot to eat and relax in the centre of Oslo. The Nordvegan is a hip spot in downtown Oslo just minutes from the palace, serving great food with a chill atmosphere; there is even a little courtyard in the back if the weather is nice.

frognerseteren

have you ever wanted to eat a norwegian meatball dinner in a beautiful traditional wooden lodge looking over all of oslo and oslofjord? well hop on the t-bane to frongnerseteren! frongnerseteren is nestled just up the hill from the famous holmenkollen winter sports complex and provides a cafeteria dining experience you won't forget, no matter the season. As far as deserts and pastries, there are many to choose from, but the local speciality is apple cake, which is only available in massive slices.


culture

olso opera house

a beautiful modern building rising from the harbour, oslo’s opera House is a public park where visitors can wander across its terraces and roofs made from italian marble and white granite.

holmenkollen ski museum & jump tower

both a great spot for a view of the city and an educational dive into the history of skis and ski culture in norway. in the summer theres also many opportunites for recreation like hiking trails and disc golf.

frogner park

frogner park and its vigeland sculpture park are the perfect places to spend a summer evening picnicking on the grass under the trees after strolling past vigeland’s bronze figures.

the norwegian museum of cultural history

the norsk folkemuseum is an open-air museum with traditional buildings from all over norway, comprehensive indoor historical exhibits, theres even a stave church.

huk

located at the end of bus line 30, huk bay is a fantastic set of rugged public swimming beaches to enjoy year round. there's even multiple bathrooms and a cafe!

tjuvholmen swimming beach

at the end of akker brygge, you will find tjuvholmen badeplass a perfect spot for a dip in the fjord.

walking

oslofjord islands

only a short ferry ride from central oslo, this the island tour is one for those who love boats and a wander. each island is dotted with cabins and swimming spots. a highlight is gressholmen, serviced only by seaplanes, it was home to Oslo’s primary airport from 1927 to 1939.


Evenings

blå

blå is a bar, music venue, and cultural hub tucked down an alleyway in the center of oslo. boasting weekly lineups of established as well as up-and-coming musical artists, this bar is the place to be on the weekends for affordable concerts and a bubbling and welcoming social atmosphere, where locals and visitors often can be found mingling, which is hard to find in scandinavian cities…

salt

a funky bar/sauna/venue salt is whatever you want it to be whenever you want. overlooking the opera house on one of oslo's several harbours, salt provides a great spot to see live performances, meet people in the sauna, or grab a drink inside or out in a series of fun composite structures.


teedays

holmenkollen dgc

18 short but deliciously technical holes nestled on the wooded slopes north west of central oslo. holmenkollen dgc provides a wonderful mix of shot shapes and terrain, all in the shadow of the impressive homekollen ski jump. the scenery and views are unparalleled by any near urban course. teepads and signage are in great shape and easy to follow just watch out for slick roots, rocks and mud if its wet out. the course is seasonal and closes for the winter.

krukhol dgc

voted best disc golf course in the world in 2024, krukhol is a fantastic experience for the ametur to pro level frisbee hucking, chain ringing enthusiast. a must visit if in the oslo area. book a tee time online if playing after noon on weekdays or 5pm on the weekend or holidays. the course is seasonal and closes for the winter.
